When water enters a house under a foundation, there is usually wicking and molding of building materials. Exterior waterproofing prevents water from entering foundation walls. Prior to the 1980s much of the original exterior waterproofing was actually damp-proofing using a degradable-based covering. Waterproofing an existing basement begins with excavating all the way to the bottom of the footings. Once excavated, the walls are sealed with a waterproofing membrane and new drainage tiles are run all around the footing.
