Discovering water or a crack in your basement can be worrying, but not every issue requires a professional service call. Many common basement leaks are caused by simple, surface-level drainage issues that you can fix yourself in just a few minutes.

Before assuming your foundation is damaged, inspect the outside of your home. The majority of minor basement water issues are caused by water pooling directly next to your foundation walls.
Downspout Extensions: Are your downspouts discharging water at least 4 to 6 feet away from your foundation? If water is dumping directly at the base of your home, reattach or extend your downspouts immediately.
Clogged Gutters: Clean out leaves and debris. Overflowing gutters drop water directly against your foundation, leading to basement seepage during heavy rain.
Soil Grading: Does the ground around your home slope away from the foundation? If the soil has settled and slopes inward toward your house, rain will flow straight down your exterior basement walls. Adding soil to create a downward slope away from the house often resolves the problem.
Sump Pump Power & Discharge: Is your sump pump plugged in and operating? Check that the discharge pipe outside is clear of debris or ice.
Rule of Thumb: If water enters your basement only during heavy rainstorms and you notice pooling water right outside near a downspout, fixing the drainage outside will likely resolve the issue without needing a professional repair.
